ADVERSE REACTIONS OF GOLD SODIUM THIOMALATE IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRI TIS PATIENTS IN SOUTHERN IRAN
To confirm the side-effects of gold sodium thiomalate (GSTM), we carried out a retrospective study examining 102 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis attending the Rheumatology Unit of Hafez Hospital, Shiraz, Iran, in whom GSTM was initiated between 1983-1989. Only patients with classical or definite RA (ARA criteria) we(e included in this study. Patients were categorized as havi...
متن کاملEndothelial Cell Adhesion Molecules
Endothelial adhesion molecules play an important role in the tissue recruitment of leukocytes in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. We have investigated the effect of the antirheumatic drug gold sodium thiomalate on adhesion molecule protein and mRNA expression in cultured human endothelial cells. Gold sodium thiomalate inhibited cytokine (TNF, IL-1, IL-4)-stimulated expressi...
متن کاملStudy on anti inflammatory effect of scorpion (Mesobuthus eupeus) venom in adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints as well as other organs in the body. Adjuvant-induced arthritis models in inbred rats serve as relevant models for RA, having many clinical similarities to this disease. Using honey bee venom as a treatment for Rheumatoid arthritis is an ancient therapy in various parts of the world. However scorpion ve...
متن کاملGold sodium thiomalate activates latent human leukocyte collagenase.
Gold sodium thiomalate, a drug used widely in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis, was found to be an activator of latent human polymorphonuclear leukocyte collagenase. The activation was demonstrated by two distinct and independent collagenase assays: by recording with a spectrophotometer at 227 nm the enzyme-induced increase in ultraviolet difference absorbance of native type I collagen conne...
متن کاملInjectable Gold-Induced Hepatitis and Neutropenia in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Gold salts have been used for many years in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The common side effects are mucocutaneous reactions, but hepatotoxic reaction and isolated neutropenia are rare complications. We report a 62-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who had developed hepatitis and neutropenia simultaneously after receiving 137.5 mg of sodium aurothiomalate.
